One Charged With Felony DUI Friday Morning

Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- The Columbia Police Department reports that a wreck Friday morning before 5:00 AM, resulting in the death of a 19-year-old, has led to charges of Felony Driving Under The Influence Resulting In Death for the driver of the car.

According to CPD Spokesperson Officer Jennifer Timmons, 20-year-old Benjamin H. Hampton was driving under the influence of alcohol along the 500 block of Veterans Road in southeast Columbia, with an unidentified 17-year-old rear seat passenger, and 19-year-old Davon Bryant of Columbia riding in the front passenger seat.

According to Police, Hampton was traveling at a high rate of speed when his Chevy Impala left the roadway and struck a tree, killing Bryant in the crash.

Emergency responders extricated Hampton and the rear seat passenger from the vehicle, and transported them to an area hospital, where at last check they both are reported to be in critical condition.

Columbia Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit continues to investigate the wreck.
