A Rural Carrier Associate delivers mail.
Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- If you're looking for a part-time job, the United States Postal Service is offering $19.45 an hour to deliver mail on rural routes.
Midlands routes cover parts of Lexington, Newberry, and Sumter, while other routes are available in Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and Spartanburg, according to officials. Apparently, the position, titled a "Rural Carrier Associate," is responsible for mail delivery when regular carriers have days off or are on vacation. Officials say "RCAs" also sell stamps, supplies and money orders.
Job postings are expected to be available on July 19 and will be available for three weeks, according to postal officials. Apply for the Job Tuesday: The USPS Employment Section
According to a Monday news release, applications may only be submitted online. Phone calls and applications are not received at postal locations. Officials say part-time associates can bid for full benefits or a chance to become a full-time regular rural carrier after one year of continuous service.
Applicants need to be able to work on an as-needed basis, with a valid state drivers license, with at least two years driving experience, a good driving record, provide their own vehicle, meet "personal" and medical suitability, and be able to pass road tests given by postal officials.
Officials say the vehicle you provide must have an automatic transmission with a large console in the center that would allow you to pass mail out of the passenger window into a customer's mailbox.
For military applicants, military service is treated like prior employment. Also, veterans are required to submit copy 4 of form DD 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty. Other applicants are required to provide the employers for the 10-year period before the date of the application.
