Parent Hacks For Tax Free Weekend

Before you head back to school shopping News 19's Roshanda Pratt and guest Kati Horton of Lexington Mommy share three tips to get the most out of Tax Free Weekend.

Columbia, SC (WLTX)- Before going back to school parents are cashing in on Tax Free Weekend. There are a few rules shoppers should keep in mind. Kati Horton of Lexington Mommy shared three tips for parents.

1. Time vs Money: Tax Free Weekend at Big Box stores usually leads to big crowds and long lines. Is it worth your time to go this weekend? YOU have to decide what YOUR balancing point is in time versus money. Going during "off" hours some times pays off well. For 24 hr stores or stores with extended hours, they tend to be much less crowded with shorter lines after supper time or late at night.

2. Know the Fine Print: Plan ahead with what you want to buy and what you need to buy. Check any fine print in sales flyers. Check the list of what's eligible for tax free and what's not. Look around to see who has the best deals, again especially on big ticket items.

3. Think Beyond Back to School: Back to School sales and tax free weekend are also a great time to get a jump start on holiday shopping. And it's never a bad idea to buy more than what's on your child's school supply list. Things will need to be replaced throughout the year and teachers will always appreciate extras if you would like to donate to the classroom.
