Petition to Get Midlands Native Included in Oscars Tribute

Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- The Academy Awards are Sunday and a petition is circulating to try and get a West Columbia native in the memoriam tribute.

Sarah Elizabeth Jones, 27, was killed last week while filming a movie near Savannah, Georgia.

She was part of a film crew shooting a documentary called "Midnight Rider," which is a film based on the life of singer Gregg Allman.

Investigators say the crew was filming near a train trestle when they were hit by a freight train. Jones died and 7 others were injured.

The goal is to get 27,000 signatures on the petition before 10am on Friday when it will be sent to the Academy for their consideration.
