Polls had shown for months that Trump had the edge in the reliably Republican state. South Carolina has not gone for a Democratic candidate since Jimmy Carter back in 1976.

South Carolina was one of the early key victories for the Trump campaign back in February, when Trump distanced himself from five other GOP candidates to win all 50 of the state's delegates. The victory showed just how strong Trump's support was with Southern voters and Evangelicals, groups that many experts thought might break toward a candidate like Ted Cruz.

The momentum carried Trump into the next several weeks of the campaign, allowing him to secure a delegate lead that he never relinquished.

Clinton also performed well in the state in her primary, getting an easy win over Bernie Sanders by a 73-26 margin.
