Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Henry McMaster says the people of South Carolina "swell with pride" at the selection of Gov. Nikki Haley to a top post in the Trump Administration.
The lieutenant governor issued his first statement Wednesday afternoon, hours after Donald Trump picked Nikki Haley as his nominee to be the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
If, as expected, Haley is confirmed by the U.S. Senate, McMaster will take over as governor. Haley has said she will stay on until the confirmation process is complete.

"Today is indeed a great day for South Carolina," McMaster said. "In selecting Governor Nikki Haley to serve as United States Ambassador to the United Nations, President-Elect Donald Trump has again demonstrated his determination to make America greater than ever before. Governor Haley will be an inspiration to all who believe in the American dream, at home and around the world. South Carolina is bursting with talent, and today we swell with pride that one of our daughters is preparing to step into history on the world stage. Mrs. McMaster joins me in offering our heartiest congratulations."
McMaster was the first statewide elected official to back Trump's campaign. His endorsement was seen as a push that help Trump win the South Carolina primary, a victory that helped propel Trump to the GOP nomination.
