Mia McLeod Wins Richland County Senate Seat

Mia McLeod defeats Susan Brill in the race to replace Joel Lourie.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Mia McLeod has defeated Susan Brill in the race to replace Joel Lourie in the South Carolina Senate.

McLeod got 53 percent of the vote, compared to Brill's 47.

McLeod is state representative for House District 79 in Richland County, while Brill is a former Richland County councilwoman and current Richland County school board member.

The race between the two had gotten increasingly negative in the final weeks of the campaign, with ads assailing both candidates positions and questioning some of their actions as members of the public.

Lourie announced last year that he would not seek re-election after 17 years in the state legislature, the last 11 in the Senate.

Senate District 22 represents a large patch of northeast Richland County, as well as a sliver of Kershaw County.
