South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Jaime Harrison will run to chair the Democratic National Committee, he announced Monday night.
Harrison, an Orangeburg native, is the first black chair of the S.C. Democratic Party and has served in that role since 2013. He announced his run for DNC chairman on the Rachel Madow Show Monday night. U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota announced he was also running for the party's top position Monday. Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, who was DNC chairman from 2005 to 2009, is also seeking the position.
Harrison is also a lobbyist with the Washington, D.C.-based Podesta Group, run by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign chairman John Podesta.
Before leading the Democratic Party in the Palmetto State, Harrison worked as director of floor operations and counsel to U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, South Carolina's lone Democratic member of U.S. Congress.
