Red Cross Feeding Residents in Vance

Vance, SC (WLTX) - Thereare still thousands of homes and businesses in the state that are without power due to last week's snow and ice storm.

Some of those who don't have power are being told it could be Wednesday before they get it back on.

For many of them, no power means they don't have a way to start warm, and that they also don't have a way to make something hot to eat.

In the Town of Vance, in Orangeburg County, the Red Cross was bringing meals to hungry people.

When we caught up with Sam and Joann Clark, residents of Vance, Joann was just getting to the Town's Family and Friend's Center, and Sam was going home to wait for the power company.

They had not had electricity since Wednesday, and one of them had to be home when the power company came, which meant one of them had to miss the first hot meal they've had in days.

"One of us needs to be there," Sam Clark said. "Hopefully, if it's takeout, she may bring me something back, but it'd make me feel better to know that at least one of us got a warm meal."

Dozens came from the surrounding community to get meals from the Red Cross Monday afternoon.

Vance is a town of about 200 residents, but the surrounding community reaches up to about 2,500, said the Town's Mayor, Michael Aiken.

"There's a very important need, because there are still many people, that still without electricity, cannot fix a hot meal," Aiken said.

Many from the town - kids, grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles all showed up to get their meals.

Residents who were inside the Family and Friend Center just before the Red Cross truck pulled into town started singing gospel music.

"Every body's happy, and every body's eating together and we're blessed," said town resident, Blondella Davis, who was at the center getting food with her granddaughter.

Mrs. Clark said she would be bringing her husband home a serving of food, after finding out that was permissible.

The Red Cross plans to remain in Vance, feeding people there at noon and 5 p.m. through Wednesday.

The Family and Friends Center is located on Camden Road.
