COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Candidates running to be South Carolina's next schools superintendent are introducing themselves to school board members.
The state School Boards Association is hosting a meet-the-candidates forum Wednesday in Columbia. The group has invited all eight Republican and two Democratic candidates who have announced their candidacy. About 100 school board members are expected to attend.
The association is holding a second forum for candidates in May.
Republicans Sally Atwater, Gary Burgess, Meka Childs, Amy Cofield, Sheri Few, Don Jordan, Elizabeth Moffly and Molly Spearman are announced candidates. The association says Atwater and Few had not responded to its invitation as of Tuesday.
Democrats Montrio Belton and Sheila Gallagher are also on forum agenda.
All are seeking to replace GOP Superintendent Mick Zais.
The two-week filing period for candidates continues through Sunday.
