Senator, Wife of U.S. Rep. Have Confrontation

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The ongoing debate over candidates appearing on ballots led to a heated exchangeTuesday between a state senator and the wife ofa U.S. Representative.

The confrontation took place between Roxanne Wilson, the wife of U.S. Representative Joe Wilson, and State Senator Jake Knotts after a senate committee meeting.

First, a little background on what led up to the problem.

Tuesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved a measure that would allow candidates kicked off the ballot by a recent State Supreme Court ruling to get back on the ticket.

About 200 candidates were removed becausethecourt decision last week which centered on the proper procedure for filing paperwork.

One of those candidates affected was Wilson's sister, who is running for Lexington County Clerk of Court.

After the hearing,Roxanne Wilsonconfronted Knotts, who opposed allowing some of the candidates back on the ballot. Knotts chief opponent in his primary race, Katrina Shealy, was one of the candidates who won't be allowed to run due to the court's ruling.

The two began to bicker, with Wilson making the case that she was a member of the public who wanted answers. Knotts responded by saying she was "a congressman's wife."

Wilson then told Knotts that "you know it's wrong, it's self-serving."At that point, Knotts walked away, but Wilson followed him to his office.

The two then met behind closed doors, and emerged a short time later. When they did, Wilson and Knotts kissed each other on the cheek, and Wilson told reporters "we made peace."
