Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Aflac has donated $400,000 to the Palmetto Health Children's Hospital.

The money is going to the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in Columbia. In honor of the gift, the Palmetto Health will rename its outpatient hematology/oncology examination area the Aflac Children's Care Center.

In 2009, Aflac joined the Columbia community when it acquired Continental American Insurance Company, which now operates as Aflac Group Insurance.

"Cancer and blood disorders are two things that we hope over time that we can extinguish, and this money is a way for us to give back to the community and to help the people who are affected by this horrible disease," said Paul Amos, Aflac's President.

Aflac has raised and contributed more than $70 million for childhood cancer treatment and research.
