Camden, SC (WLTX) -- Students at Jackson School put their green thumbs to work Saturday morning for their Garden Day Kickoff.

Kids and volunteers set up six container gardens - one for each grade - to plant seedlings. Students will maintain the gardens all year while learning about agriculture and nutrition in the classroom.

Jackson was one of forty-six schools in South Carolina to receive a $5,000 Farm to School Grant. The program teaches students the importance of eating healthy and gives them skills to learn how to grow their own food.

"The theme at Jackson School is Growing Leaders, and this year we are extremely excited about the addition of our 'Green and Growing Garden," said Jackson School Principal Matia Goodwin. "As the first gold LEED certified school in the state, we take pride in our green initiatives and work hard to surpass that certification by continuously improving our school."
