It's Now Illegal for Minors to Have Tobacco

(Columbia) - A new law went into effect Monday making it illegal for teens in South Carolina to possess cigarettes and other tobacco products.

For years it has been illegal for merchants to sell tobacco to minors.

Now, anyone under 18 caught with tobacco could face a $25 fine or community service for each violation. Repeat offenders could have their driver's licenses suspended.

Merchants will also face stiffer penalties for selling tobacco to minors.

Officials with the Columbia Police Department have said that officers will work with merchants, the public, and minors through schools and parents to raise awareness of the new law.
