(Richland County) - New details have emerged in the weekend stabbing of a University of South Carolina football recruit.
Richland County deputies released the incident report taken early Sunday morning following the stabbing of 18-year-old Quintin Richardson.
The report said Richardson was at the Hunters Green apartment complex off Alpine Road when he got into a verbal altercation with a 19-year-old man. In the report, Richardson told deputies the argument turned physical and while he was holding the man down on the ground he felt something poking him in the back. Richardson told deputies he later realized he'd been stabbed.
The report said two witnesses helped separate the men and took Richardson to the emergency room while a third witness secured the knife and placed it in a plastic bag for safekeeping.
According to family members, Richardson underwent surgery Sunday for stab wounds to his lower back and arm and is continuing to recover at Palmetto Health Richland.
In a Monday phone conversation, his mother told News 19 that she was amazed by all the support from the Gamecock family.
"It really, really made us feel good to be a Gamecock, that he made the right decision to go. As a whole this is more than we ever expected and we just appreciate that."
