(AP) Highway 176 was shut down outside Charleston after police found a "suspicious item" in a car during a Saturday night traffic stop.
A robot was dispatched to get the material out of the vehicle and Charleston County Sheriff's Deputies detonated the suspicious material in the early morning hours. The road was reopened shortly after 4am.
Law enforcement officials closed the road about 7 p.m. after the traffic stop in Goose Creek, home to the Naval Weapons Station. The station houses the U.S. Naval Consolidated Brig, a military prison where enemy combatants have been held. The traffic stop took place about 7 miles from the sprawling Navy facility.
The two in the vehicle were arrested for possessing Unlawful Explosives and the FBI is working with local authorities in the investigation.
