Student Held on Explosives Charge Meets with Parents

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The parents of one of two men jailed in Moncks Corner on explosives charges have met with their son.

The parents of Youssef Megahed traveled from Tampa, Florida, to visit their son yesterday. They brought him a prayer rug and a copy of the Islamic holy book the Quran.

Megahed and Ahmed Mohamed -- both studying at the University of South Florida -- were charged last week with possession of an incendiary device after police say they found suspicious items in their car during a traffic stop.

The item was detonated while police kept a portion of the highway closed and the men were arrested afterward.

Berkeley County Chief Deputy Butch Henerey says the case is still being looked into by federal investigators, but no federal charges have been filed.
