Faith-Based Program Helps S.C. Prisoners Combat Addictions

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Brian Shores has been in and out of prison for the past 30 years. But when he gets out Monday after five years for aggravated assault and battery, he hopes it will be his last time in jail.

This time, Shores says, he has a new lease on life thanks to a faith-based prison recovery program.

The 52-year-old Shores was among 32 inmates who graduated this month from the Potter's Clay Faith Based Addictions Treatment Unit.

The program is attended by people in their final 60 days in prison. It's for inmates with addictions ranging from alcohol and marijuana to methamphetamine and heroin and is one of only two like it in South Carolina prisons.

While the physical symptoms of drug withdrawal are faded memories for most of the program participants, counselors work to keep them from falling back into destructive patterns when they return to society.
