One of those users is Barry Mullinax, who commutes from Irmo to downtown Columbia every morning. "I drive it sensibly, don't try to speed, and don't make unnecessary trips," he says of ways to save money.
Mullinax is an engineer at with the water bureau at DHEC, and estimates he drives about 30 to 35 miles a day. He says that if he could find someone to carpool with, he could save about $600 a year. "it's worth getting into a carpool with at least one other person," he says.
So far, he hasn't found anyone, because he likes to get to the office so early. "The biggest problem that most of us have had has been convenience and that's been the problem I've had. I like to start at 7:00, most people want to start at 8 or 8:30," he says. But, he's thinking about rearranging his hours soon, if he can get some help at the pump.
He's not just sitting around and waiting for an answer, though. He's taking other steps to help out. "I joined a carpool at lunch, we call it lunch buddies. I've done that ever since I came to DHEC," he says.
