State Library Deals with Budget Cuts

For starters, printers have been removed from staff desks, saving about $6,000 on ink, toner and paper.

The agency has also issued a mandatory 10-day furlough for all staff, which will save approximatley $178,000 in total funds. They have also places a hiring freeze on all vacant positions.

The State Library is cutting about $22,000 in periodical subscriptions and plans to stop priniting and mailing its quarterly newsletter.

In a written press rlease, State Library Director David Goble said, "We are looking for different perspectives on how we can accomplish our most important services with greater effectiveness..."

The South Carolina State Library is funded by the state and by the federal government through tthe Library Services and Technology Act administered by the Institue of Museum and Library Services.
