(WLTX, AP) - The threat for snowfall for the Midlands is now over, as a winter storm which was to have caused considerable snow fizzled out.

A measurable snowfall was reported in Saluda, Newberry, Fairfield, and northern Kershaw Counties. Everywhere else saw nothing.

The snowfall wound up being less than the computer models were initially showing Sunday morning, thanks in part to the influence of dry air that ended most precipitation by 1 a.m.

The first actual snowfall reports took place in Fairfield and Newberry Counties around 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

As a precaution, all Midlands public school districts were closed Monday, except for those in Sumter and Clarendon Counties.

While the Midlands escaped any serious snowfall, the Upstate wasn't as lucky.

The winter storm brought up to 8 inches of snow in the Upstate and Piedmont along Interstate 85.

Duke Energy reported about 74,000 customers without electricity early Monday. Most of those were in Greenville, Spartanburg and Anderson counties.

The Transportation Department reported snow on I-85 in Cherokee County near the North Carolina border, shifting to snow and ice in Spartanburg, slush in Greenville and ice in Anderson County near the Georgia border.
