Fort Jackson, SC (WLTX) - Comic talk show host Stephen Colbert got a taste of what it was like to go through basic training at Fort Jackson.
Colbert, who hosts "The Colbert Report" on Comedy Central, was there last Friday to tape a segment for the show.
Private Colbert, as he was known for the day of training, arrived in a limo to 'report for duty.' Fort Jackson's website claims Colbert rubbed his instructor the wrong way when he reportedly said, "can I get a bellman."
Things got more difficult as the day wore on.
In photos released by Fort Jackson, Colbert can be seen rappeling down Victory Tower, running, and crawling on his hands and knees under a barbed-wire fence.
While at the base, he was under the guidance of Sgt. 1st Class Demetrius Chantz, an instructor at the U.S. Army Drill Sergeant School.
When asked to sum up Colbert as a recruit, Chantz reportedly said, "He wouldn't graduate. We would be in trouble if he was in uniform."
Fort Jackson officials say the taping was for an upcoming trip to the Persian Gulf by Colbert. He'll apparently do a week of shows from the region.
Colbert is a native of Charleston, and this isn't the first time he's used a Palmetto State location for humor. In 2007, he was awarded the key to the city of Columbia, and he tried to get on the ballot. He was unsuccessful in that attempt.
