Kershaw County (WLTX) -- Troopers have charged a driver with Felony Driving Under the Influence after the passenger in his vehicle died at the scene of an accident Saturday morning.

Troopers say the accident occured at 9:15 a.m. on Twenty Five Mile Creek Road, just outside of Elgin.

Lance Cpl. Josef Robinson say 25-year-old Donnie Thigpen was driving a 1997 Jeep Grande Cherokee northbound on Twenty Five Mile Creek Road when he lost control and ran off the left side of the road. Authorities say he hit a large tree and the vehicle overturned.

Kershaw County Coroner Johnny Fellers has identified the passenger of the vehicle as 27-year-old Melvin Wright, of Columbia. Fellers says Wright died from head injuries he received in the accident.

Robinson says Wright was wearing his seat belt but died at the scene. It is unclear at this time if Thigpen was wearing a seat belt. Thigpen was not injured.

Robinson says Thigpen has been charged with Felony DUI, Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving a Death, and Failure to Render Aid. He's booked at the Kershaw County Jail where his bond has been set at $230,000.
