NEWBERRY, S.C. (AP) -- Brad Edwards, the new Athletics Director at Newberry College, has hired former Central Florida assistant Steve DeMeo as the school's new head basketball coach. Edwards, the former USC standout and NFL Super Bowl champion with the Washington Redskins who is in his first stint heading an athletics department, announced the hire Wednesday at the NCAA Division II school. DeMeo replaces Jeremy Luther, who left to become the head coach at Armstrong Atlantic State. DeMeo spent the past season with UCF, helping develop last season's 2008-09 Conference USA player of the year Jermaine Taylor. Before that, DeMeo spent 10 seasons with Providence College and rose to associate head coach on Tim Welsh's staff. DeMeo was also an assistant at Iona for three seasons. He's had head coaching experience at Bronx Community College and Monroe Junior College in the Bronx.
