Columbia (WLTX) - An oven may be to blame for a fire at the Village at Sandhill that forced residents to evacuate early Wednesday morning.
Deputy Chief Aubrey Jenkins with the Columbia Fire Department says when firefighters arrived on the scene off Clemson Road just after 11:00 Tuesday night they saw smoke and flames coming from the roof.
Thanks to fire alarms and a sprinkler system, everyone in the 28 occupied apartments was able to get out safely. SCE&G had to cut the power off to the building, but officials were working to get the power turned back on in some areas so residents could go back into their apartments.
Jenkins says they are focusing their investigation on a vent that was part of an oven in a pizza place on the first floor. The fire caused at least $200,000 in damage.
