SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- Georgia is getting $1 million in federal stimulus funds to buy a new ferry boat for Savannah's downtown riverfront.
U.S. Rep. John Barrow, a Savannah Democrat, announced the federal grant to the Georgia Department of Transportation on Tuesday.
The money will pay for a new ferry boat to carry residents and tourists across the Savannah River between the city's downtown historic district and neighboring Hutchinson Island, site of a large hotel and convention center.
Savannah already has a water taxi for the riverfront, but Barrow's office says the existing ferry is aging and inefficient.
