Fetus Found at Sewer Plant was Stillborn Female

Greer, SC (GreenvilleOnline.com) -- A Monday autopsy determined that a fetus found at a sewer treatment plant in Greer on Sunday was a stillborn 18-week-old female, according to Greenville County Deputy Coroner Scott Ramsey.

The fetus weighed 190 grams, or less than half a pound, and was nine inches long, Ramsey said.

The fetus was found in a filter bin at Renewable Water Resource's Pelham Wastewater Treatment Plant at 2756 E. Phillips Road, as it was being cleaned out, according to the Greenville County Sheriff's Office.

The fetus appears to have gone through the main lines to get into the plant, Ramsey said. How the fetus ended up in the system remains unknown, he said.

It doesn't appear that any laws were broken, said Lt. Shea Smith.

"If it was just a miscarriage that happened, it's probably going to be very difficult to determine who it belongs to unless they come forward, obviously," he said. "There's no reporting requirement to report that I'm aware of."
