Group Snags 13-Foot Gator on Last Day of Season

Lake Marion, SC (WLTX) -- On the final day of South Carolina's alligator "hunting season," a group of some of the Palmetto State's finest rounded up one of the largest 'gators this season.

According to Elloree Police Chief Preston Avinger, the alligator measured in at 13-feet, two inches and weighed in at 1,060 pounds.

A group that included the Chief of the St. Matthews Fire Department, a South Carolina Law Enforcement Division special agent and the Calhoun County Coroner were able to capture the animal near Stump Hole Landing in Lake Marion in Calhoun County on October 10th.

Organizers say securing the creature took two and a half hours.

The group of harvesters included SLED Special Agent Gregg Antley, Elloree Police Chief Preson Avinger, Windstream Service Tech Terry Chavis, First Assembly student Tyler Garrett, St. Matthews Fire Chief Wendy Heckle, Calhoun County Coroner Donnie Porth, and Elloree Police Asst. Chief Lin Shirer.
