Spartanburg County, SC (WSPA) -- A woman is under arrest after Spartanburg County authorities say she harmed her three-month old son.
The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office arrested 20-year old Jessica Ann Smith, of Spartanburg, Thursday afternoon and charged her with child neglect and child abuse with great bodily injury.
An incident report obtained by News Channel 7 states that the child was brought to Chesnee Family Medical Center Monday afternoon. Authorities say that hospital officials called to have the infant transported to Spartanburg Regional Hospital.
The child was taken to Spartanburg Regional Hospital where he was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit suffering from dehydration and oxygen deprivation. According to the report, the infant began to have seizures on Tuesday and a MRI was performed on the child. The MRI showed that the child had suffered an injury consistent with suffocation.
Sheriff's investigators say that Smith told officers that she and the child had stayed with a friend the night before and had laid the baby in a bed to sleep for a short period of time. Smith allegedly told investigators that she went to check on the child several hours later and there was a pillow on the infants face.
The report states that Smith told officers that she removed the pillow and the infant's lips were blue and that is when she took the child to Chesnee Family Medical Center for treatement.
Smith is currently being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
