Frugal Folks for Fifty Years...and Counting

(WLTX) -- "Cheap! Forget the frugal, he's just plain old cheap!" Ann Kelley laughs at her husband. "Not really, most people don't realize how frugal I am," Kenneth Kelley jokes along.

They are self-proclaimed frugal folks.

"Being born back in the 30's and the hard times we had coming up I think I didn't become thrifty, I learned to be thrifty," Kenneth explains. "Neither one of us have expensive taste anyway, I guess we were meant to be together," Ann says.

Now they've been together nearly fifty years and they've been saving all the while.

"Gee whiz, over the years we've saved thousands and thousands of dollars that could have been thrown away," Ann says.

And they have some thrifty habits.

"He wants me, when I wash clothes, not to wash on the large cycle or the extra large cycle you wash on the small or the medium cycle, because it uses too much water and water costs money you know," Ann explains.

They buy in bulk.

"Then you can save it in these jars and it's cheaper that way and over years time that saves a good bit of money," Kenneth says.

He also boasts a more unique method.

"I would wait until I got to work if I had to go to the bathroom and I'd use the state's toilet paper," Kenneth says, laughing.

As the pennies started piling, saving made sense.

"He learned to be frugal through necessity then, you know what? It got to be fun, it got to be fun to see how much you could save," Ann says.

Despite their quirky ways to cut-back, this deal-hunting duo wouldn't dare do anything differently.

"I wouldn't want to be with anybody else, I don't think anybody else could have suited me," Ann says, with a smile.
