Spartanburg County, SC (WSPA) - A teenager is dead after she was struck by a truck on Highway 357 in Spartanburg County.
According to Cpl. Bryan McDougald of South Carolina Highway Patrol, the wreck happened at 1:15 Sunday morning when a 1980 Ford pickup truck driven by 49-year old Gary Watson, of Lyman, struck the teen, identified by Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger as 19-year old Viktoria Vasiliye Melnik, of Inman. Clevenger says Melnik was transported to the Village at Pelham Hospital where she died due to her injuries shortly thereafter.
McDougald says that Melnik was walking in the northbound lane of the Highway when the accident happened and Watson was unable to stop in time to avoid her. Speed does not appear to be a factor, but the accident remains under investigation.
