H1N1 Vaccines Offered in Some Schools

Pelion (WLTX) -- The H1N1 vaccine is being offered in some Midlands public schools this week, including schools in Lexington School District 1.

To vaccinate or not to vaccinate: it's a decision that did not come easily to the parents of Forts Pond Elementary fourth grader Christian Farmer.

His mother, Michelle Farmer, said no one in her family had ever received any type of flu vaccination before Monday.

"My son was the one who wanted it. So, after we did a little research, my husband and I both agreed to go ahead and let him get the shot," she said.

The 9-year-old child was one of more than 50 percent of students who had consent from a parent at the elementary school.

"If they had not offered it at the school, he probably would not have gotten it, 'cause I really had not thought about giving it to him," she said.

By the end of this week, most of Lexington 1's schools will have completed initial vaccinations.

Michelle says, hearing from the district when she received the consent form made her think seriously about the vaccine.

"I think so much publicity has come about the swine flu this year and that's made us think more about it," she said.  "It's good for the kids, they're involved in so many different activities. They are always around each other. So, I think it was a good choice choosing this school and for these children to get the shot, the vaccination."

Christian Farmer is relieved to have the vaccination.

"Yeah, I'm happy I won't get as sick," he said.

The second round of Lexington 1 vaccinations are in December, for students aged 10 and younger.  Those students need two shots, spaced 30 days apart.

The school districts offering the H1N1 vaccinations are on a schedule determined by the Department of Health and Environmental Control.  Check with your school district to get details as to your local vaccine schedule.
