Hundreds of Families Seek Salvation Army Help This Christmas

Columbia, SC (WLTX)-- Starting today, hundreds of families lined up at the State Fair grounds to register for Christmas presents with the Salvation Army.

It was about a two-and-a-half hour wait to get in the door Tuesday, and organizers say this is the busiest year they've ever had.

Many families were happy to wait because it will make all the difference on Christmas morning.

"I just can't wait 'til Christmas," 15-year-old Johnathon Clinton says. "Opening up presents Christmas morning and being all excited! You just get that rush, and you stay up all night waiting saying, 'Oh, what I'm gonna get? What I'm gonna get? [sic]"

It's a feeling that only comes once a year. But this year, Johnathon didn't think he'd get any presents. His mom just wouldn't be able to afford them.

"I'm tired of my child going through all the holidays and everything without anything," his mother, Priscilla Simmons says. So, she registered with the Salvation Army to save his Christmas.

"First time I've had enough courage to come and ask, you know, for help--ask for anything," Simmons says.

Lakesha Fuller got in line at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, with her three kids on her mind.

"I like to see them happy, not sad, not miserable. I want them to have the best," she says.

She isn't afraid to ask for the help she needs.

"Usually, I can be able to provide mostly Christmas presents for my children, but since the economy is in crisis right now, it's been really rough. So, any helping hand would be very helpful right about now," Fuller explains. "The Salvation Army can help me in ways I can't help myself."

Presents under the tree will make waiting in line worth Mom and Dad's time. Kids like Johnathon appreciate it.

"At least I know somebody cares, and like I know she loves me, and I'm grateful for that. It makes me feel like I'm special," he says.

If you would like to sign up for a little extra holiday cheer and you're resident of Richland, Fairfield, Newberry or Lexington counties, the Salvation Army is taking names at the State Fair Grounds. Make sure to bring a picture ID and social security cards for everyone in your family.

You also need proof of income from the last 30 days and proof of household expenses, like a stub from a bill you paid.
