Man Shot to Death at Country Store

RUSSELLVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina man has been shot and killed at a rural country store and sheriff's deputies have arrested a suspect.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that 46-year-old Anthony Alphonso Middleton of St. Stephen was killed Thursday afternoon at the store in Russellville near Lake Moultrie.

Berkeley County Sheriff Rick Ollic reported 29-year-old Elijah Mahammid Brown of Cross was arrested late Thursday and charged with murder. Deputies had spent the day searching for Brown with tracking dogs and a helicopter.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Salisbury says Middleton died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Ollic says the shooting is thought to have followed a dispute between Middleton and another man.

It was unclear Friday if Brown had an attorney.
