Gilbert, AZ (Arizona Republic) - A Gilbert, Arizona man lost his hand when a woodworking saw in his garage fell. He was able to pick it up, place it in a bag and wrap his arm before calling 9-1-1.

The 52-year-old man was home alone Thursday afternoon doing woodwork and had placed the table saw he was using on top of an ice chest, Gilbert Fire Captain Mike Connor said. Link for More Information: Man's Hand Amputated by Saw

"The saw basically fell, and it amputated his entire hand," Connor said.

The man then picked up his own hand, placed it in a bag and wrapped his arm before calling 9-1-1.

"He was able to not panic and do as much as he could to stop the bleeding," Connor said. The man was in shock when firefighters arrived and was then taken by helicopter to a trauma center.

It is unknown whether surgeons will be able to reattach his hand, but Connor said there may still be hope.

"We have excellent hand surgeons here in the Valley," Connor said. "If the hand is able to be reattched, he would have the best chance at it here in the area and would be recieving the best care."
