Officials: Saluda, Congaree, Broad River Now Safe Again

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina health officials say bacteria levels have returned to normal following a sewage spill sparked by the rains from the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida.

The State reported that signs warning of pollution on the Saluda, Congaree and Broad rivers around Columbia were removed Monday.

The heavy rains sent raw and partially treated sewage into the streams last week.

Signs had been posted warning people not to swim or use kayaks or canoes in the streams.

The riverkeeper for the three rivers, Alan Mehrzad, says Columbia-area officials should increase their efforts to upgrade sewer systems that are prone to fail during heavy rains.
