Aiken, SC (WLTX) -- Aiken police Tuesday arrested a 40-year-old woman they say attempted to kill a public safety officer by driving a 2005 Nissan Sentra into the man in the parking lot of Maria's Restaurant.

Deputies with the Aiken County Sheriff's Office arrested Merita Carter of Skyland Farm Road in Williston and charged her with assault with intent to kill, reckless driving and speeding.

Investigators say Carter was driving the Nissan in the restaurant parking lot located near the intersection of East Pine Log Road and Powderhouse Road sometime Tuesday.

Deputies say Carter drove away, turned around and drove directly in the path of the officer.
