Riverbanks Zoo Tomistoma Training

Columbia (WLTX) -- Have you ever seen a crocodile respond to the commands "come," "stay," and "sink?" News19 got a close look at a special training session at Riverbanks Zoo and you can see it too.

Otherwise known as false gharial crocodiles, tomistomas at Riverbanks Zoo are trained by using target poles and food.  To see the training, click the video box at the top right of this page.

These creatures are some of the most unusual of the crocodilians.  Tomistomas have distinctive, long, slender snouts used to catch birds and have light brown-colored bodies crossed with dark bands.  Males can reach lengths of up to 20 feet.

Tomistomas are found on the islands of Sumatra, Borneo and other areas of Indonesia and Malaysia.
