Tiger Woods' Wife Used Golf Club, Freed Him from Car

(USA TODAY, AP) - Megawatt superstar and world No. 1 golfer Tiger Woods was injured in a one-car accident early Friday near his Florida home that left him with facial lacerations.

After being taken to Health Central Hospital in Ocoee by ambulance, Woods, 33, was treated and released.

"Tiger Woods was in a minor car accident outside his home last night. He was admitted, treated and released today in good condition," said a joint statement from Health Central Hospital and Tiger Woods' office.

According to a release from the Florida Highway Patrol, Woods struck a fire hydrant while pulling out of the driveway of his Windermere home at about 2:25 a.m. and then hit a neighbor's tree.

Windermere Police Chief Daniel Saylor says Woods' wife used a golf club to smash out the back window and helped get the golfer out of the car.

Saylor said that Elin Nordegren told officers she was in the house when she heard the accident and came outside. Saylor says officers found Woods laying in the street with his wife hovering over him.

Saylor says Woods had cuts on his lips and blood in his mouth. He says his officers gave him first aid until fire rescue came about 10 minutes later.

The air bags in the 2009 Cadillac SUV Woods was driving did not deploy. The report said alcohol was not a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending, according to the FHP report.

According to a variety of reports early in the day, Woods' injuries were serious. But Woods' agent, Mark Steinberg, told USA TODAY that Woods "is OK."

The accident report classified Woods' injuries as serious, but FHP spokeswoman Kim Montes said troopers consider the injuries serious if they require more than minor medical attention.

Windermere Police arrived at Woods' house at 2:30 a.m., within two minutes of receiving the 911 call, Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn said in an interview with USA TODAY. The town's police station is less than a mile from Woods' house in a gated community.

Bruhn said he does not know why the Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the accident instead of the Windermere Police or the Orange County Sheriff.

Woods is scheduled to play in the Chevron World Challenge - which benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation - beginning Dec. 3 in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Woods' office has yet to say whether or not Woods will play.

Woods last played two weeks ago in Australia, where he won the Australian Masters.

After missing eight months following reconstructive surgery to his left knee, Woods returned to the PGA Tour this year and won six times. He has won 82 times around the world and 14 major championships.

Earlier this week, Woods attended the Stanford-Cal football game. He was an honorary captain, tossed the coin at the start of the game and was inducted into Stanford's sports Hall of Fame at halftime.
