Trash Fire Leads to Calls for Voluntary Evacuation

Lee County, SC  (WLTX) - A large trash fire at a landfill in  Lee County Monday led to a voluntary evacuation in that area.

The evacuation request was for an area on Egypt Road and Lila D Lane. That's in the Red Hill community, near the Kershaw/Lee County line.

Fire crews from Lee, Kershaw, Sumter, and Darlington Counties responded to the blaze in a large landfill in the area that is home to several industrial dumps.

Officials said there could be a potential health risk from possible chemicals in the smoke from the fire. The evacuation was in place for everyone in the area, but officials say it was highly recommended for people with respiratory problems or anyone who feels uncomfortable about the situation.

Lee County Fire officials say the blaze is under control.
