Orangeburg, SC (WLTX) -- Orangeburg County deputies have arrested a 27-year-old Bowman man they say opened fire on an officer Monday, and a judge denied the man bond.
Deputies with the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office charged Torrey Stephon Elliott of Ann Street in Bowman with assault with intent to kill, two counts of receiving stolen goods, possessing a weapon during a violent crime, and failure to stop for a blue light. A judge denied bond Monday on charges of simple possession of marijuana and driving under suspension against Elliot.
Investigators say they tried to stop a black SUV that Elliot was driving sometime Monday morning, after they discovered that the vehicle was towing a stolen motorcycle. They say the SUV sped away when pursued by authorities. After the vehicle finally stopped, deputies say a responding officer saw the barrel of a rifle emerge from the driver's side window.
That's when investigators say Elliot fired a single shot at the deputy, before the deputy fired once in return. After that, investigators say Elliot was arrested without incident.
