Ridgeville, SC (AP) -- A guard at one of South Carolina's maximum security prisons is recuperating in the hospital after he was assaulted by at least two inmates. Corrections Department spokesman Josh Gelinas says the inmates were placed in isolation cells after the attack about 9 a.m. Wednesday at Lieber Correctional Institution near Ridgeville. Gelinas says the officer was sent to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston with non-life threatening injuries. Lieber is home to the state's death row, but Gelinas would not say if death row inmates were involved in the attack or where in the prison the attack occurred. The names of the inmates and the officer have not been released. Gelinas said the prison was secure Wednesday afternoon.
