COLUMBIA, SC (AP, WLTX) -- What's in a name? When it comes to Midtown at Forest Acres Mall, it's confusion.
"It was the Richland Mall and then the Richland Fashion Mall," said Pasta Fresca owner Lauren Goodale.
Jamie Lewis works at the Vitamin Shoppe across the street from the mall.
"I've never heard it called Midtown at Forest Acres," Lewis says. "I thought it was Richland Fashion Center or something."
He says, no matter the name, the mall could use an energy boost.
"I've walked through it a couple of times and I've never seen a mall like that before," Lewis said.
This mall has even landed on a dubious website: deadmalls.com (ironically under the name Richland Mall).
Clearly Midtown has had its share of troubles. And if all that wasn't enough, now the Verizon Wireless 24 hour call center is packing up shop and moving.
Verizon is investing $40 million to build a new call center in Elgin, taking their 1500 employees with them. It will be located near Spears Creek Church Road in Elgin.
A Verizon spokesperson says the call center is the company's largest. They handle calls from across the country and around the world. They say the project will also create about 100 construction jobs.
But what will that mean for the mall in Forest Acres? Lewis has a pretty bleak idea.
"That mall is now officially dead, just put a tombstone out in front of it."
Forest Acres City Administrator Mark Williams says not so fast.
"While we hate to see them go, it will bring that property back into the mall for someone else to move into. It's a positive in the long term."
Pasta Fresca is an Italian restaurant across the street from Midtown. Goodale says her eatery won't be impacted either way.
"It's never added to our equation of our business ever."
And she shares Williams feelings. She says maybe now nicer stores will move in, to help solidify the mall's questionable identity.
"They are very friendly over there and open to the community, but I feel like if there were more high end retain stores people would come."
Groundbreaking for the new Verizon call center is scheduled for next week.
