Lugoff, S.C. (WLTX) - A young girl has spent the last two months working hard to bring some joy to her peers this Christmas. On Saturday, she got to see the fruits of her labor.
"Today we gave out bikes and it was really fun,"says Alesha Hudson. In fact, the 10 year-old gave away seventy-two bicycles to kids who otherwise would have gone without a bike, or perhaps a Christmas gift at all this year.
Janet Washington says finances are tight and if not for Hudson's remarkable act of kindness, her three children--Maria, Santos and Samuel--may not have had anything under the tree this year.
"It opened my heart because a little girl can give something away for kids that are less fortunate,"says Washington.
Samuel Washington was excited about getting his bike just in time for Christmas. "I like it. It's small, it's blue,"says Washington.
The only person more joyful than the Washington kids, is Hudson herself. "It warms my heart,"says Hudson.
Four years ago, she was inspired by her grandmother's commitment to helping others through outreach. It was at that moment that Hudson decided to get involved too.
Sherry Moore's children, Trinity and Steven say they're happy to have bikes for Christmas. Mom is joyful too. "It's great to see that he's getting him a bike and she got her a bike and that's all that matters. They got everything they wanted for Christmas,"says Moore.
Hudson got what she wanted too. Merry Christmas and I hope you like them,"says Hudson.
Meanwhile Hudson says she fell short of her goal of one-hundred bikes this year. But she plans to start early in 2010.
You can donate a new or used bike by calling (803) 438-0145 or by making a cash donation. Checks can be deposited at the First Palmetto Savings Bank or taken to 1434 Baldwin Road, Lugoff, SC 29078.
They should be made out to Outreach Bicycle For Needy Children.
