Lake Murray, SC (WLTX) - A massive home on Lake Murray has been seriously damaged by a fire, but the destruction reportedly may have been part of a pre-planned demolition effort.

The fire took place Sunday morning at the home, known as the Brantley Manor, that's located off Marina Road in Ballentine.

High reaching flames and thick smoke could be seen coming from the home, which includes sections designed to look like a castle. The fire created a sight for residents, several of whom e-mailed us with pictures of the flames.

The Columbia Fire Department hasn't been able to release much information on the fire, but officials did say the it appeared to be part of a demolition effort at the home. A resident living out there said part of the home had been torn down earlier in the week.

We're told by neighbors that people in the area sometimes referred to the home as the "Lake Murray Castle." One resident living out there said the main home on the property is 17,000 square feet.

It's unclear if the owners of the home were there when the fire started.
