Suspect Arrested in Camper Theft

Chapin, SC (WLTX) -- A Mountville, SC man was arrested on suspicion of stealing a camper trailer and a case of sunglasses.

According to Lexington County Sheriff James Metts, 53-year-old Thomas Richard Armstrong is accused of stealing a pop-up camper trailer valued at approximately $6,500 on March 25th, along with being in possession of a case of 25 pairs of sunglasses that had been reported stolen from an eye care center in Chapin.

The arrest warrant alleges Armstrong broke into a storage facility at approximately 11:25pm March 25th, attached a 2011 Rockwood pop-up camper to his Ford Explorer and drove away.

On March 27th Lexington Deputies received information leading them to Overlook Court in Chapin, where Armstrong was staying, and after questioning, arrested Armstrong for the theft of the trailer.

The warrant also alleges Armstrong provided false information to the Deputies, due to two outstanding warrants for his arrest on unrelated charges from the SC Department of Probation and Parole Armstrong was aware of.

After placing him under arrest, Deputies found one marijuana cigarette on his person, and a suitcase in his possession that contained about 25 pairs of sunglasses and cases, reported stolen from an eye care center in Chapin.

Armstrong was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center on charges of grand larceny, receiving stolen goods, giving false information to a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, and simple possession of marijuana.

He was released from the LCDC Wednesday, after posting bail of $9,312.
