Kalaeloa, HI (CBS, KGMB) -- Moses Felipe visited Nimitz Beach for a fun day of surfing with his son--instead, he had a close encounter with a shark.
"He left the skeg alone. He bit down, went over the skeg," Moses said. The gouges on the underside of Moses's surfboard are deep and jagged.
"I just heard and felt the crunch," Moses said. He said he thought he hit a reef Sunday, 50 yards out at Nimitz Beach on Oahu's southwest shore.
When he looked back toward his left foot, he said, "This is where I seen the head." He saw a shark clamping down on his 10-foot board.
"He jerked me around," Moses said, "I fell in the water. I came up. I seen the shadow. I said, 'Oh, shoot! Oh, my God!'"
His son, Cameron, was on his own board 20 feet away.
"All I saw was him fall off the board, and I saw the tail just "pack!" on the water," said Cameron.
The diameter of the bite measures 16 inches. Cameron had a good look at the animal.
"Like six to eight feet," Cameron said of the length of the beast, "Huge."
Authorities posted shark warning signs at Nimitz and White Plains Beach through the afternoon and night, then lifted them in the morning.
Regulars to that shore say they see sharks quite a bit out here. When we dive, there's tiger sharks like that around.
"There was actually one that came out, maybe about six feet, that was laying on the sand, and it went back out. So it didn't really bother anybody," Moses said.
After the shark bit Moses's board, it swam away. So did he.
"Instead of pulling my leash to get the board to me, I swam to my board making a lot of splashes," Moses said, "'What am I doing?'"
"I was terrified," Moses said, "First thing I looked at was his hands and legs--make sure it was there. And all we did was paddle in as fast as we could."
"I finally made it to shore and I just flopped. And I said, 'Gosh. Thank God we're safe."
"He bit down," Moses said, "He bit again." Moses says he's still shaking from his close encounter.
"He's seen sharks before," Cameron said, "But never this close."
