(WLTX) - Ridley Scott returns to "Alien" territory with his new film "Prometheus." But has he made a prequel to his monstrous classic - or has he just remade "Battlefield Earth?"

While it was initially scripted to be another chapter in the "Alien" franchise, the director claims to have changed his mind during the movie's evolution and settled upon a re-imagining of the original. Only, this time, he has tried to broaden the scope with questions about life, faith and immortality. This would have been great had it really amounted to something. But, in the end, it's still a sci-fi horror flick dressed up to look like an epic adventure.

Personally, I think the guy intentionally created a prequel to the series but didn't want his audience to recognize it until a particular point within the film. Unfortunately, the word was out long before the movie and, as a result, the twists are anti-climactic. It's nearly impossible to watch this without thinking of (and, thus, comparing it to) "Alien."

Nevertheless, if viewed on its own credentials, I'd call it entertaining. Naturally, the special effects are first-rate and, despite some confusing choices in character motivation, the story wraps itself up nicely. And, yes, there will likely be a sequel...but they'll probably need to cast some new actors.

For anyone expecting greatness out of this film, there will be some serious disappointment. But if you're just wanting "good enough," this should do the trick. In other words, it's a typical summer movie.
