LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Emmy nominations are out and "Mad Men" and "American Horror Story" are leading the pack.

Kerry Washington and a pajama-clad Jimmy Kimmel (Surprise! It was supposed to be Nick Offerman) got up early bright and early to read the names of the 2012 Emmy nominees.

"Mad Men" received 17 Emmy nominations Thursday and a chance to set a record as the most-honored drama series in TV history.

Stars Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss are up for lead acting honors.

The miniseries "American Horror Story" received a matching 17 awards, including an acting nod for star Connie Britton.

Other leading nominees include drama series "Downton Abbey" and two miniseries, "Hatfields & McCoys" and "Hemingway & Gellhorn."

Here is a list of this morning's announced nominees: 

Nominations for best television drama series are: "Boardwalk Empire," ''Breaking Bad," ''Downton Abbey," ''Game of Thrones," ''Homeland" and "Mad Men."

Nominations for best television miniseries or movie are:  "American Horror Story," ''Game Change," ''Hatfields & McCoys," ''Hemingway & Gellhorn," ''Luther" and "Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia."

Nominations for best actor in a television drama series are: Steve Buscemi, "Boardwalk Empire"; Bryan Cranston, "Breaking Bad"; Michael C. Hall, "Dexter"; Hugh Bonneville, "Downton Abbey"; Damian Lewis, "Homeland"; and Jon Hamm, "Mad Men."

Nominations for best actress in a television drama series are: Glenn Close, "Damages"; Michelle Dockery, "Downton Abbey"; Julianna Margulies, "The Good Wife"; Kathy Bates, "Harry's Law"; Claire Danes, "Homeland"; and Elisabeth Moss, "Mad Men."

Nominations for best television miniseries or movie are:  "American Horror Story," ''Game Change," ''Hatfields & McCoys," ''Hemingway & Gellhorn," ''Luther" and "Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia."

Nominations for best television comedy series are: "The Big Bang Theory," ''Curb Your Enthusiasm," ''Girls," ''Modern Family," ''30 Rock" and "Veep."

The 64th annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be presented Sept. 23 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and airing live on ABC.
