Lexington, SC (WLTX) - Friends placed flowers and balloons on the side of the road where a Gilbert High School student was killed over the weekend.

William Patrick Corley would have turned 18 years old on Sunday.

"Get to know more people and experience things.  He did that a lot," said Kayla Cole, one of Corey's friends. "He was outgoing, fun to be around, and a football player."

Cole described Corley as, "caring, loving, sweet, and there for you when you needed someone to talk to."

Corley stopped Saturday night in the 1300 block of Highway 378 in Lexington where another driver had hit a deer.  According to a Coroner's report, Corley was helping move the deer from the road when an oncoming car struck him.

"He was very helpful," said Kaitlyn Merryman, a friend of Corley's since 3rd grade.  "If you needed someone to talk to he was there.  That's just pretty much how he is."

Conselors were on site at Gilbert High School Monday for teachers and students.

"He was a great guy. I love him and miss him," said Cole.
